William Cobbbledick – quarryman and slate merchant.

William Cobbledick was born on 22 Feb 1824 at St. Teath in Cornwall. He was the son of William Cobbledick (1790-1852) and Philippa (née Lobb) (1797-1874) of St. Teath, Cornwall. His sister Margaret married Nicholas Male senior, his sister Elizabeth married James Kernick and his sister Mary Ann married Frederick Martin. Religion – Wesleyan Methodist

William arrived in South Australia, aged 26 years, aboard British Sovereign on 11 June 1850. William, aged 30 years, married Margaret O’Donohue, aged 21 years, (1833-1908) from Clare in Ireland at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, West Terrace, Adelaide on 9 Jan 1854. They had 11 children:

  • Alexander Henry (1863-1903) b. at Willunga, d. at Adelaide and buried in West Terrace Cemetery

William Cobbledick worked in the slate quarries and in 1869 he was one of the men who requested a public meeting regarding the slate quarries. He paid rates on a house and held an acre of land (valued at £6) in the township of Willunga (1855-1857).

William Cobbledick, aged 61 years, was found dead in a gully about half a mile from his home on 31 May 1885 by Joseph Sibly and the subsequent inquest found “death by a fit of apoplexy accelerated by drink”. His widow Margaret died on 12 March 1908.
