James Holman was born in 1827 and he was the third son of John Holman (1795-1853) and Melicent Hodge (1795-1850). He arrived, aged 12 years, with parents and siblings from Crowan, Cornwall on 7 June 1839 aboard Sir Charles Forbes at Port Adelaide from Liverpool. According to the 1841 census James Holman (14 years) was living in Willunga and he lived in Willunga for more than a decade (1841-1853). James Holman (1827-1903) married Susanna Atkinson (1828-1894) on 9 September 1852 at Willunga. He was a farmer at Willunga, Bald Hills and Napperby. By 1853 James and Susanna Holman had moved to Bald Hills near Yankalilla where they lived for three decades (perhaps until after 1883) but certainly by 1887 they had moved to Napperby near Crystal Brook. They had eleven children (five sons and six daughters):

  • William (29 June 1853-16 September1936) married Agnes Stewart Carmichael on 25 July 1883 at Telowie, district of Frome
  • Bridget Catherine (23 August 1854-21 October 1890) married Thomas Smith on 25 July 1883 at Bald Hills
  • Thomas Atkinson (13 June1856-14 November1892) died aged 36 years at Napperby, unmarried
  • Susanna Millicent (14 January 1858-10 June1890) married Robert Bain Carmichael on 30 March 1887 at Napperby
  • James (30 April 1859-23 April 1860) died aged 11 months at Bald Hills
  • Mary Louisa (23 July 1860-8 September 1890) married Henry Young 31 October 1888 at Napperby
  • Hannah (Annie) (4 April 1862-25 December1893) died aged 31 years at Napperby, unmarried
  • Ada (20 September 1863-23 September 1889) died aged 26 years at Napperby, unmarried
  • Phillippa (7 March 1865-25 June 1895) died aged 30 years at Napperby, unmarried
  • James (26 February 1867-29 June 1894) died aged 17 years at Napperby, unmarried
  • Robert John (28 October 1868-13 April 1942) married Eliza Rosanna Hawkins on 04 January1894 at the Wesleyan Church, Napperby. She died age 36 on 5 September 1906 at Nelshaby, and he remarried on 20 October 1920 at Bald Hills age 51 to Jane Nosworthy, spinster age 45

James Holman, aged 76 years, died on 1 May 1903 at his son’s residence (Nelshaby) at Napperby in the mid north of South Australia. He was buried in the Crystal Brook cemetery. Susanna died 31 May 1894 at Napperby age 65 and she was buried in the Crystal Brook cemetery.
