Holman, Susanna Mrs. (née Atkinson) – wife and mother.

Susanna Atkinson was born on 17 August 1828 and was baptized at St. Mary and St. Peter’s church in Waddingham, Lincolnshire, England. She was the second daughter of Robert Atkinson (1774-1832) and Susanna(h) Fish (1788-1832) of Hayes Farm, Snitterby. She was only 4 when her parents died. Religion – Church of England.

Susanna travelled with her four brothers (William, Robert, Thomas and Joseph) and her sister (Bridget), some with their families, travelled to South Australia on board Singapore from London. They arrived at Holdfast Bay on 12 November 1839, Susanna was then 11 years old and she lived in Willunga from 1840 until 1853 when she and her new husband James Holman moved to Bald Hills near Yankalilla.

Susanna Atkinson married Cornishman James Holman (1827-1903) on 9 Sept 1852 in St Stephens Anglican Church, Willunga. James Holman was the son of John Holman (1795-1866) and Millicent Holman (née Hodge) (1795-1850). By 1853 James and Susanna Holman had moved to Bald Hills near Yankalilla where they lived for some years (perhaps until after 1883) but by 1887 they had moved to Napperby near Crystal Brook. They had ten children (four sons and six daughters):

  • William (1853-1936) b. at Yankalilla, m. Agnes Stewart Carmichael (18601951), d. at Unley
  • Bridget Catherine (Kate) (1854-1890) b. at Bald Hills, m. Thomas Powell Smith (1847-1937), d. aged 36 years at Telowie
  • Thomas Atkinson (1856-1892) b. at Bald Hills, unmarried, d. aged 36 years at Napperby
  • Susanna Millicent (1858-1890) b. at Bald Hills, m. Robert Bain Carmichael (1862-1927), d. aged 32 years at Telowie
  • James (1859-1860) b. & d. aged 1 year at Bald Hills
  • Mary Louisa (1860-1890) b. at Yankalilla, m. Henry Young (1854-1942), d. aged 30 years at Napperby
  • Hannah Anne (1862-1893) b. at Bald Hills, unmarried, d. aged 31 years at Crystal Brook
  • Ada (1863-1889) b. at Bald Hills, unmarried, d. aged 26 years at Napperby
  • Philippa (1865-1895) b. at Bald Hills, unmarried, d. aged 30 years at Napperby
  • Robert John (1869-1942), b. at Bald Hills, m (1st) Eliza Rosanna Hawkins (1871-1906) (2nd) Jane Nosworthy (1876-1955), d. at Ashfield

Susanna Holman (née Atkinson), aged 65 years, died on 31 May 1894 at Napperby near Crystal Brook in South Australia and she is buried in the Crystal Brook cemetery (Row 7 Grave 289D).
