Martin, Bridget Mrs. (formerly Hall, née Atkinson) – wife and mother.

Bridget Atkinson was born on 13 July 1826 and she was baptized on 16 July 1826 at St. Mary and St. Peter’s Church in Waddingham, Lincolnshire, England. She was the fourth daughter of Robert Atkinson (1774-1832) and Susanna(h) Fish (1788-1832) of Hayes Farm, Snitterby in Lincolnshire, England. Religion – Church of England.

Bridget (aged 13) arrived with her four brothers (William, Robert, Thomas and Joseph) and their sister Susanna, some with their families, at Holdfast Bay in South Australia on board Singapore from London on 12 November 1839. She lived in Willunga from 1840 until her death in 1908.

Bridget Atkinson, aged 22 years, married Corporal James John Hall (1821-1863), aged 26, on 1 April 1848. They lived in Adelaide and Wellington. James John Hall had joined the SA Mounted Police on 21 Feb 1841 and he died 22 Nov 1863. They had six children (two sons and four daughters who all died young):

  • Catherine Clarissa (1854–1859) b. at Adelaide, d. aged 4 years at Adelaide
  • Ella Mary (1855-1856) b. at Adelaide, d. aged 1 year at Adelaide
  • Thomas George (1856–1898) b. at Willunga, m. Emily Maud Read, d. aged 42 years at Parkside
  • Dora Phillis (1857-1859) b. & d. aged 2 years at Adelaide
  • Susannah Ada (1858–1863) B. at Adelaide, died aged 5 years at Willunga
  • Spencer Atkinson (1861–1927) b. at Adelaide, m (1st). Jessie Walsh in 1887. m (2nd). Katherine Kay on 28 Jan 1909, d. at McLaren Vale & buried at Willunga

Five years after the death of her first husband Bridget Hall, then aged 42 years, remarried this time to Thomas Martin (1825-1900), aged 43, on 27 Feb 1868. Her second husband Thomas Martin died in 1900 and Bridget Martin (formerly Hall, née Atkinson), aged 82 years, died at McLaren Vale on 16 September 1908 and she was buried in the St. Stephen’s Anglican cemetery in Willunga.
