McMillan, Isabella (nee Gilchrist) Mrs

Isabella Gilchrist married George McMillan (1780- ) tidewaiter (Customs officer) of Southend, Argyll, on 2 June 1814 at Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. She was the daughter of Duncan Gilchrist, a merchant at Campbeltown. They had at least four children:

  • Barbara/Barbra (1816-1890) married Duncan McNaughton (they arrived in South Australia in 1856 per Switzerland)
  • Duncan Gilchrist (1817-1879 died at Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland) married Barbara McVicar Harris at Campbeltown, Argyll Scotland 5 April 1854
  • Annabella (1819-1896) married in the Adelaide district 25 May 1843 to Duncan Stewart
  • Isabella (1824-1908) married at St Stephen’s Church, Willunga to John William Butterworth 31 October 1850

According to her son Duncan’s obituary in 1880, mention was made of three sisters remaining in South Australia: Mrs McNaughton of Black Rock, Mrs Duncan Stewart of Aldinga and Mrs John Butterworth of Normanville.

Isabella McMillan (nee Gilchrist) (1780-1860), widow of George McMillan, aged 59 years, with three of her children, arrived on 12 Aug 1839 in South Australia together with just over 100 fellow passengers on board the 501-ton barque Ariadne from Greenock, Scotland (Captain George MacLeod). Duncan Stewart, aged 20 years, was also on board.

Isabella Gilchrist McMillan, aged 84 years, died at the residence of her son-in-law, Duncan Stewart, in Aldinga in 1864. Her death notice noted she was the ‘relict of George McMillan, late of Customs, Campbelltown, Argyleshire, Scotland’.
