Montagu, George (Mounted Police)

Date of Birth/Death:

1843/1904

George Montagu, aged about 23, joined the Mounted Police on 16 July 1866. He served at Willunga  for just over a year, from 1 Nov 1868 until 1 Dec 1869. He then served at Kingston in 1871. From 8 August 1873, he transferred to the Northern Territory Police, and he served at Palmerston (Darwin) in the Northern Territory for at least six years (1873-1879).

This was when there was increasing conflict between white settlers and the traditional owners. In late 1885, George reported that he had led a party of mounted constables to Daly and Mary Rivers, where they slaughtered Aboriginal people. The incident occurred after a party of Aboriginal men attacked and killed some Europeans in 1884. There was a widespread outcry, and an inquiry was established.

Perhaps because of the notoriety earned from the enquiry, George was stationed at Murray Bridge for a short time around February 1886. He then served at Mt Gambier, commencing in December 1886.

George Montagu, aged 47 years, married Edith Maud Crocker at Christ Church, Mt Gambier on 23 April 1890, when he was 47 years old. Edith was 23.  They had two daughters:

  • Edith Doris Marcia (1891- ) b. at Mt Gambier m Daniel Flint in Victoria in 1926, and
  • Barbara Estelle (1895- ) b. at Mt Gambier unmarried

George and Edith later lived at Lilydale in Victoria until 1903, when they moved to Fitzroy. George Montagu, aged 61, was working as a newsagent when he died at 263 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, on 26 Aug 1904. He was buried in the Boroondara Cemetery.
