Nelson, James Alexander

James Alexander Nelson was born on 17 July 1860 at Myponga the son of James Campbell Nelson (1822-1877) and Susannah (née McInnis or Mcginnis or McGuinness) (1826-1901). Religion – Church of England. He was a carpenter. He married Mary Ann Alice Coleman (1864-1938) on 21 April 1885 at St Peter’s at Malalla. Their first child Ethel Muriel was born at Malalla in 1886 but their second child James Campbell was born at Aldinga in 1889 as were all of their subsequent children through to 1909. They eventually had eleven children (9 boys and 2 girls):

  • Ethel Muriel (1886-1971) born at Malalla, married Frederick Eyles (1884-1943) at St Paul’s Church, Adelaide on 14 July 1917. She died at Canterbury, New South Wales and her ashes were interred in Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia
  • James Campbell Nelson (1889-1898) born and died at Aldinga as a child
  • Clarence Hubert (1892-1979) born at Aldinga, served in both World War I and World War II; married Esther Corlett Kelly, at St Pauls Church, Adelaide on 20 August 1921 – she died 1958. Their ashes are in Centennial Park Cemetery
  • Viola Alice (1894-1976) born at Aldinga, married Benjamin Walter Franklin (1895-1975) on 6 October 1923 at St Augustine’s Church, Unley
  • William Barton (1896-1966) born at Aldinga. He served in World War I. Married Vera Ruby Coleman on 18 February 1925 at St Pauls Church, Adelaide. He died in Melbourne, Victoria
  • Hugh Percival (1899-1955) born at Aldinga, married Mary Ellen Parmenter (1902-1994) on 10 September 1921 at St Georges Church, Gawler, and died at Devon Park, South Australia
  • Alick Campbell (1901-1956) born at Aldinga, married Gladys Dorothy Burford (1900-1986) on 30 June 1928 at the Methodist Church, Prospect North. He died at North Adelaide following a fall from a ladder during his work as an electrical linesman
  • Reginald Allan (1903-1965) born at Aldinga, married Pearl Pleasant Chittleborough (1905-1978) on 16 August 1928 at St Augustines Church, Unley. He died at St Georges, South Australia
  • Mervyn Albert (1905-1958) born at Aldinga, married Birdie Egginton (1907- ) on 21 December 1927 at St Pauls Church, Adelaide – they divorced in 1942; he died at Grange, South Australia
  • James Murray (1907-1981) born at Aldinga, married Dulcie Evelyn Eyles (1907- ) on 26 June 1937 at St Augustines Church, Unley. He died at Adelaide, South Australia
  • Laurence Edward (1909-1971) born at Aldinga, married Mavis Ruth Foreman (1910-1995) on 19 June 1935 at the Registry Office, Adelaide.  Laurence died at Goodwood, South Australia

The Nelson family had moved to Aldinga before July of 1888 when James was involved in the rescue of the survivors of the Star of Greece and he was resident in Aldinga until 1911 (22 years). In 1889 he was appointed as the Minister’s Warden at St Ann’s Anglican Church, Aldinga and he was re-elected in 1890. James Alexander Nelson nominated for, and was elected as, an auditor for the elections for the Aldinga District Council on at least five occasions between 1895 and 1908. They moved to Goodwood in 1911.

James Alexander Nelson died on 26 May 1946 and was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena. He was survived by two daughters and eight sons. Mary Ann, as Alice Nelson, pre-deceased him on 9 June 1938 and was interred in Centennial Park Cemetery.
