John Pethick was born at Bowithick, Cornwall, England on 26 August 1827. Aged 12 years, he arrived with his parents Abraham Pethick and Ann Pethick and their family on board the ship Cleveland on 18 December 1839. Religion – Church of England.

John Pethick, aged 27 years, inherited Bowithick Farm (section 221) after the death of his father Abraham Pethick on 27 January 1855 at Aldinga. John’s older sister Mary Ann Pethick married Henry Harker at Bowithick Farm on 31 May 1855. John Pethick, aged 28 years, married Mary Jane Male (1835-1871), aged 19 years, on 20 September 1855. Mary Jane was the daughter of John Male and Philippa (née Allen) and younger sister of Lavinia May Male who married John’s brother Henry. They had eight children (5 boys and 3 girls):

  • Benjamin (1857-1923) born at Aldinga, married Jemima Vercoe (1856-1937) on 6 April1881 at Norwood, died at Torrensville, South Australia
  • Lilia/Lilya (1858-1939) born at Aldinga married Francis (Frank) Gabriel Culley (1860-1946) at Adelaide in 1881, died at Willunga
  • Christopher (1860-1936) born at Aldinga, married Edith Carrick (1862-1906) on 2 April 1884 at Adelaide, died at Moonta, South Australia
  • William Henry (1862-1944) born at Aldinga married Alice Pengilly (1863-1942) on 12 December 1889 at Dulwich, South Australia, died at Adelaide
  • John (1865-1903) born at Aldinga, married Rachel Wyatt in 1898 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, died at Fremantle, Western Australia
  • Thomas Male (1866-1946) born at Aldinga, married Jessie May Thompson (1876-1940) in March 1901 at Perth, Western Australia, died at Katanning, Western Australia
  • Rose Susannah (1869-1898) born and died Aldinga, unmarried died aged 31 years
  • Lavinia May (1871-1955) born at Aldinga, married Alexander Gunn (1876-1939) on 27 February 1908 at Aldinga, died in Adelaide.

John Pethick was a farmer at White’s Valley. He was the executor of his brother William’s will after William died in 1862. Mary Jane Pethick, aged just 36 years, died on 29 November 1871. After the death of her husband Henry Harker in 1862, Mary Ann (nee Pethick) lived at Bowithick Farm for more than 20 years until her death in 1884. She probably helped to raise her brother John’s eight children then aged from 14 down to an infant after his wife Mary Jane died in 1871. John Pethick, aged 66 years, died on 12 November 1893 at Aldinga. John and Mary Jane Pethick are both buried in St. Stephen’s Anglican Cemetery, Willunga.
