William Pethick was born at Bowithick, Cornwall, England on 18 April 1825. Aged 14 years, he arrived with his parents Abraham Pethick and Ann Pethick on board the ship Cleveland on 18 December 1839. Religion – Church of England.

William, aged 28 years, married Sarah Anna Norman, aged 24 years, (1829-1899), daughter of John Norman (senior) at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church at Willunga on 16 August 1853. They had six children:

  • Kate Norman (1854-1864) born and died at Willunga, aged 9 and a half years
  • Norman William (1856-1933) born at Willunga, married Marion Muir Davis (1869-1945) on 22 October 1895 at St. Thomas’ Church, Port Lincoln, South Australia, died at Adelaide
  • Rose Anna (1857-1864) born and died at Willunga, aged 6 and a half years
  • Anne Elizabeth (Amy) (1858-1864) born and died at Willunga aged 5 years
  • Fanny (1860-1864) born and died at Willunga aged nearly 4 years [death notice notes ‘beloved adopted child of Mrs Thomas Culley’]
  • Ada Elizabeth (1861-1864) born and died at Willunga, aged 2 and a half years

William Pethick was a farmer near Willunga. William Pethick, aged 36 years, died on 9 January1862 at Aldinga Bay. Only two years after the early death of her husband, Sarah Anna Pethick (nee Norman) had another tragic loss when 5 of her 6 children died (all aged under 10 years) from Scarlatina (Scarlet Fever) in February 1864.
