Shepherd (nee Bastian), Philippa

Philippa Bastian was born in 1827 at Crowan in Cornwall, England. Religion – Wesleyan Methodist (Uniting Church). She was the second daughter of Sampson Bastian senior (1791-1846) and Philippa (nee Holman) (1797-1872). Aged 12 years, she arrived with her parents on board Java from London on 13 October 1839. She grew up as a teenager in Willunga during the 1840s. John Shepherd, aged 25 years, (1823-1915) married Philippa Bastian, aged 21 years, on 18 March 1848. They had nine children (seven sons and two daughters):

  • Robert Bastian (1848-1919) born at Willunga; married 9 November 1871 to Julia Agnes Fanny Skinner at Christ Church, Yankalilla, South Australia; he died at Prospect and was buried at North Road Cemetery,
  • John (1850-1941) born at Willunga, married Mary Jane Nottle on 11 March 1874 at the Presbyterian Church, Blyth Plains. He died at Goodwood, South Australia.
  • Thomas (1852-1932) born at Willunga, married Isabel Laura Catt on 20 March 1881 at Parkside. He died at Maylands, South Australia.
  • Joseph (1854-1946) birth registered Adelaide district, married Emily Martha Pettinger on 1 January 1887 at Thorncliff Villa, East Adelaide. [Her father was Richard Palmer Pettinger, Police Inspector who was murdered in 1862 at Government House, Adelaide.] Joseph died in Perth, Western Australia
  • Stephen George (1856-1920) b. at Yankalilla, married Evaleen Maud Grace Charlotte Hanns on 20 April 1892 at the Baptist Church, Adelaide. He died near Blyth, South Australia
  • William Henry (1858-1927) birth registered Adelaide district; married Mary Anne Kerr on 14 July 1880 at Chalmers Manse, Adelaide. He died at Gawler, South Australia
  • Alfred Edward (1860-1933) born at Yankalilla; married Georgiana Martha Maud Middleton on 8 June 1885 at Prospect; he died at Prospect, South Australia
  • Ann Hannah Eliza (1862-1955) born at Myponga; married John Gibson Miller at Blyth Plains on 6 October 1887. She died at Wayville, South Australia
  • Philippa Jane Mary (1864-1947) born at Yankalilla; married Thomas Edward Fisher at Chalmers Church in Adelaide on 6 August 1919

The family lived at Willunga (1845-1855), Yankalilla (1855-1865) and Blyth (1865-1890) before retiring to live at Wayville. John Shepherd, aged 92 years, died on 9 November 1915 at Wayville and his widow Philippa (nee Bastian), aged 91 years, died on 16 April 1918 also at Wayville.
