Robert Shepherd was born in Appleton-Le-Moors, Yorkshire, England on 13 February 1795. He was the son of Robert Shepherd and Rachel (nee Thorp). Religion – Church of England. Robert married Ann Shepherd (1801-1858) on 2 February 1823 at Lastingham, Yorkshire. The 1841 UK Census shows he was a farmer living at Appleton, Yorkshire with his wife and 9 children. Robert (48) arrived with his wife Ann (42) and eleven surviving children (Rachel, Ann, Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, Robert, Joseph, John, George, Samuel and Thomas) in steerage aboard Francis Spaight from London on 23 November 1843. Robert and Ann Shepherd eventually had fifteen children (9 sons and 6 daughters), 4 of whom died in infancy:

  • John (1823-1915) married Philippa Bastian (daughter of Sampson Bastian senior) on 18 March 1848 at St John Church, Adelaide. He died at Wayville, South Australia on 9 November 1915 aged 91 years. Philippa died at Wayville, South Australia on 16 April 1918 aged 91 years
  • Robert (1825-1825) died as an infant.
  • Rachel (1826-1913) married Edward Henry Best on 30 November 1853 at Trinity Church, Adelaide. She died at Maylands, South Australia on 14 June 1913 aged 87 years
  • Ann Susannah (1827-1893) married John Hyde on 10 March 1855 at St John Church, Adelaide. There were no children of this marriage. It appears the couple separated, and John re-partnered. Ann died 8 April 1893 aged 66 years at Aldinga. She is memorialised adjacent to her parent’s grave in the Anglican Cemetery, Willunga.
  • Robert (1829-1871) married Emily Hyde on 21 January 1851 at Trinity Church, Adelaide. He appears to have died in early 1871 at Dalkey, South Australia
  • Joseph (1830-1830) died as an infant.
  • Elizabeth (1832-1905) married John Boutell (sometimes Bodell) at St Stephens, Willunga on 29 July 1857. She died 13 July 1905 aged 73 years at Yankalilla, South Australia
  • Hannah (1834-1910) married Richard John Shepherd, son of Thomas Shepherd, on 20 May 1857 at Trinity Church, Adelaide. She died 15 November 1910 at Maylands, South Australia, aged 76 years
  • Mary Jane (1835-1920) married Isiah Hill (1830-1899) on 8 May 1869 in West Melbourne. She died at Welland, South Australia on 23 October 1920 aged 80 years
  • Joseph (1836-1836) died as an infant
  • George Stephen (1837-1911) married Emma Mills on 21 October 1863 at Christ Church, North Adelaide. He died 10 July 1911 at Hundred of Dalkey, Balaklava, South Australia aged 74 years
  • Louisa (1838-1840) died as an infant.
  • Emmanuel (1842-1932) married (1st) Susan Bennetts on 25 April 1872 at Chalmers Church, Adelaide; (2nd) Marcia Sinclair Buttrose on 22 June 1898 at the residence of Adelaide Buttrose, North Norwood. A widower, he gave his age as 50; she was a spinster age 33. He died 7 January 1932 aged 91 years at Hackney, but his residence was Maylands, South Australia
  • Thomas (1843-1908) he died in hospital in Adelaide on 10 December 1908 aged 65 years. He does not appear to have married
  • Hyett (1845-1936) married Elizabeth Mary Dennis on 18 May 1870 at the residence of Mrs Cropley, Bald Hills, Yankalilla district. He died 25 June 1936 at Unley, aged 90 years

Robert Shepherd held an occupation license in September 1845 and his last son Hyett was born at Hawthorn Farm, Aldinga, on 15 September 1845. In September 1845, he purchased section 220(80 acres) for £89 10 shillings. Hawthorn Farm is located on section 220.

In April 1846 Robert Shepherd purchased section 210 for £89 ten shillings, in 1847 section 200 and in 1849 he purchased section 199 (country lot of 77 acres) for £77 1 shilling. In 1850 he signed a ‘Declaration of confidence in Mr John Stephens’ a journalist and tradesman.

In 1851, he purchased section 323 (78 acres) for £81. All land is located in District C. By 1856 Robert Shepherd also owned land near Yankalilla and later, at Myponga, but he appears to have remained living at Hawthorn Farm until his death in 1867.

Robert died on 29 January 1867 at Aldinga aged 74 years. His wife Ann had died on 25 December 1858 at Willunga aged 57 years. They are both buried at St Stephen’s Anglican Cemetery, Willunga.
