Shore, Samuel

Date of Birth/Death:

1824/1901

Principal occupation=Horse-breeder, miller, storekeeper

Samuel Shore was born in about 1824 and he arrived in South Australia before 1847 (unclaimed letter). Religion – Church of England. Samuel was resident in the Aldinga district from before 1848 until after 1864. Samuel Shore was servant to Mr James Hunter at Aldinga Plains by 1848. He won second prize (£3) in mid-July 1848 at the Willunga Ploughing Match. He won first prize (£4) at the Willunga Ploughing Match in July 1849, second prize (£3) in late July 1849, second prize (£3) at the Glen Osmond Ploughing Match in mid August and first prize (£5 and a silver medal) at the Morphett Vale Ploughing Match in late August 1849. In the 1850s he went on to own his own teams and was a regular ploughman in both the horse and bullock categories at the State and District Ploughing Matches at Aldinga, Willunga, McLaren Vale and Morphett Vale where he regularly won prizes. By 1855 he was judging in the ploughing matches and had started to employ men as ploughmen (W Holman).

Samuel Shore (1825-1901) married Mary Butterworth (1831-1917), oldest daughter of Joseph Butterworth and Alice (nee Broadbent), at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Willunga in 1850. They had 5 children (1 son and 4 daughters):

  • Elizabeth Alice (1851-?) born at White’s Gully; married 1st Andrew Watson on 19 September 1868 at the residence of Samuel Shore, Franklin Street, Adelaide; married 2nd as a widow, Charles Robson Tomlinson/Thomlinson on 28 May 1877 at St Lukes Church, Adelaide
  • Margaret Cleland (1852-?) born near Willunga; no further details known
  • Margaret Jane (1854-1932) born at Aldinga, married John McAnna at the residence of Samuel Shore, Adelaide on 20 February 1877; she died in hospital in Adelaide
  • Samuel jnr (1856-1921) born at Aldinga married Matilda Brown on 11 March 1884 at Church of England, Busselton, Western Australia; he died in Subiaco, Western Australia
  • Annie Emily (1858-1886) born at Aldinga, married Harpley Davis (1848-1900) on 25 March 1875 at the residence of Samuel Shore, Adelaide. She died at Woodville, South Australia
  • Joseph (1860-1861) born and died at Aldinga as an infant

Samuel and Mary Shore were living at White’s Gulley near Aldinga by 1851, possibly in one of the four cottages on section 240 belonging to Joseph Butterworth. Shore was involved in horse breeding, regularly advertising travelling stud animals standing at his property on a temporary basis. In 1859 he was described as a miller and was probably working for his father-in-law Joseph Butterworth. Then, in 1860 and again in 1861, he obtained a storekeeper’s licence at Aldinga. He was elected a councillor for the Aldinga District Council in 1863 and 1864.

By 1875 Samuel and Mary Shore were living in Adelaide, probably at McLaren Street where Samuel died, aged 75 years, on 11 October 1901 and his widow Mary Shore (nee Butterworth), aged 87 years, died on 28 October 1917.
