John Snoswell senior, aged 49 years, his wife Amy, aged 51 years, and son John junior (17) arrived in South Australia aboard Africaine in November 1836. John married Elizabeth Holman (1821-1856), daughter of John (senior) (1793-1853), on 2 January 1843 at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide. They had seven children (4 boys and 3 girls):

  • John Mourilyan (1844-1927) born at Encounter Bay, South Australia, married Matilda Coleman at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide on 16 July 1888. He died in hospital in Adelaide, his residence noted as Crafers, aged 83 years

John Snoswell was a boatbuilder, later publican and then a farmer. He was resident in Willunga from 1845 until at least 1870. According to his son’s obituary he set up a boatbuilding business in Port Adelaide after he arrived. Late, John was the licensee of the Bush Inn for 2 years from March 1845 to March 1847 – this was the second (two-storey) Bush Inn located at the back of what was subsequently 51 High Street. In January 1847 John Snoswell purchased section 2148 (80 acres) for £81 15s at the Government Land Sale. John and his family appear to have remained resident in Willunga until 1869 when, aged 50 years, he relocated to Port Adelaide. In December 1869 he leased (Lease 33677) part of Lot 6 (at the corner of St Vincent Street and Torrens Place) and he became the landlord of the Duke of Wellington Hotel (1869-1873). He advertised his 80-acre section of land at Willunga, including a vineyard, for sale in March 1871.

John’s wife Elizabeth, aged 35 years, had died on 28 January 1856 at Willunga and John, aged 37 years, married for the second time to Eliza Currey (1834-1874) on 20 May 1856 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Adelaide. They had 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl):

  • Samuel Curry (1859-1860) born and died at Willunga as an infant
  • Eliza (1860-1928) born at Willunga; married Joseph Coleman Wells at St Andrews Church, Walkerville on 23 April 1900. Of Goodwood, she died in hospital in Adelaide aged 68 years. The couple had a daughter, Margery Elmore Wells born in 1903 in Broken Hill, New South Wales
  • William John (1862-1949) born at Willunga; married Mary Jane Phillips at Semaphore on 16 July 1890. He died at Largs North, South Australia aged 87 years

John Snoswell, aged 55 years, died on 4 September 1873 at the Duke of Wellington Hotel, Port Adelaide. He left a detailed will. His second wife Eliza, aged 40 years, died at Port Adelaide in 1874 and she is buried in the Alberton Cemetery.
